The Port Huron Times Hearld News Paper: Area man works at North American International Auto Show Videographer produces Australian news segment

The Port Huron Times Herald ran this story on the front page their newspaper January 13.

Area man works at North American International Auto Show

Videographer produces Australian news segment

Premier of South Australia Jay Weatherill and Scott Bert, Detroit Videographer

Jay Weatherill, the premier of South Australia, shakes hands with Port Huron photographer and videographer Scott Bert on Monday at the Detroit Auto Show. Bert produced a segment for Channel 7 news Australia on GM’s commitment to keep production lines in South Australia.

Australian TV audiences will see the work of a Port Huron videographer when they tune in to news from the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week.

Scott Bert, a wedding and event photographer and videographer, filmed and produced a segment for Channel 7 Australia with a local crew Monday from Cobo Center in Detroit.

The channel is the Australian equivalent of the NBC network, Bert said. A wedding and event photographer for 16 years, Bert said the auto show shoot was his first news assignment.

Bert’s primary assignment was to cover GM’s announcement to keep its production lines in South Australia.

“It was a big thing to show them in Australia that their politicians are fighting for them,” Bert said.

Navigating through the Chevrolet exhibit — which is as large as about four football fields — at Cobo during the frenzy of the media preview to make sure his sources were all in the same place at the same time for the story was stressful, Bert said.

“It was on pins and needles as to when it was all going to come down,” Bert said. “We needed to make sure it all happened at one time.”

Bert said he questioned Jay Weatherill, premier of South Australia; Kim Carr, Australian Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research; and Michael Devereux, chairman and managing director of GM Holden Ltd. for the segment.

After shooting footage and recording interviews, Bert said he had to scramble to edit the video and upload it to the Australian network via a satellite truck.

With media from around the world covering the Detroit Auto Show, satellite trucks lined the streets outside Cobo Center and were competing for air time, Bert said.

Although Keepsake Photo and Video — which Bert runs with his wife, Kathy — will remain his primary business, he said he hopes the experience will help him get his foot in the door to cover the 2013 auto show.
